Chapter 13 — The Video They Made

Then Kabir, on camera — not the researcher explaining things to Aryan for the audience's benefit, but Kabir directly addressing the camera as himself — talking for eight minutes about the history of the Chambal dacoits. Not the sensational version. The version that started with the land tenure system of the zamindari era, the caste violence, the police brutality that had pushed ordinary people into the beehad generation after generation. The version that named Bhagwan Das and five other people from Man Singh's gang whose names were in the police records but nowhere in the popular memory of the place.

The silhouette on the rim of the bowl. Kabir's translation. Bheema Das's voice, which they had not been able to record clearly but which Aryan had reconstructed from memory and had Kabir verify word by word: Make it true.

And finally: Aryan, on camera, for the first time not in front of a dramatic backdrop or with the performance energy of the host. Just in the Morena hotel room, the night after it happened, looking into the camera and saying what he had understood.

"We came here to make Dark India Episode 17," he said. "We came because the Chambal dacoits are dramatic history and dramatic history gets views. We brought our camera equipment and our social media strategy and our monetisation model into a place where real people lived real lives and died for real reasons that are not entertainment. And a man whose grandfather was one of those people spent a day making sure we understood what that felt like from the other side. He did not hurt us. He gave us something we did not come for. I'm not sure we deserved it."

He paused. "This video will probably not perform as well as our regular content. It does not have the right structure for the algorithm. I don't know what it will do with the channel or with the audience we've built. But Bheema Das asked for one thing and I think it's the least we can do." He looked at the camera. "Make it true."

End.◆

The video was uploaded on a Thursday morning. By Friday it had 400,000 views. By the following Wednesday it had 3.1 million, driven primarily by shares from history educators, academics, and people from Morena and Gwalior and Dholpur who had never seen their region's history described as anything other than a crime story.

Vikram Choudhary called Aryan two weeks after the upload. He said: "Bheema Das told me to tell you something." A pause. "He said: 'The marks on the wall — the ones that showed them the way out — I cut them fresh. The old ones had faded. I cut them fresh for the first time in twenty years, for these four people. Not because they were special. Because they were the first ones who put the camera down.'"

Aryan sat with that for a long time after the call ended.
