The thing that the system was not designed to address — the thing on floor ten, the thing in the open area, the presence that attended to you with the patience of something that did not experience time the way you did — that was not a labour violation and was not addressable by the existing frameworks. It was there. It was in the building. The building was still open, still operating, because despite the journalist's story and the investigation, no one had found a legal mechanism for telling a company they could not use a building because something was living in it above the top floor.
Rajan had gone back.
She had not argued with him. She had said: please don't. He had said: my daughter. She had said: you are Retained, you are safe in the way their calculations make you safe, but the moment your value changes — and he had said: I know. And gone anyway. Because some things were larger than safety and smaller than sense, and he was a man who had been counting the cost of his daughter's disappearance for twelve years and had found no bottom to it.
He sent her a message every three days. The messages said: still here. nothing new. She replied: noted. This had been going on for four months.
She turned over in the dark. She was awake and she had learned, since Zenith, to not fight wakefulness at three AM — to work with it, to use the specific quality of three-AM thinking, which was different from other-hour thinking. Less structured. More willing to hold contradictory things without resolving them.
She held the contradictions of what she knew.
The tenants were not malevolent in the way the word usually meant. They had not hunted. They had not destroyed. They had gathered, catalogued, used the infrastructure, and absorbed people who had reached the furthest point of awareness — not killed them, presumably, but transitioned them into something else, something that did not send messages back. This was different from malevolent but it was not harmless. The distinction between something that did not intend harm and something that did not harm were not the same distinction, and she was not going to paper over the gap between them with the comfort of considering intent.
