Chapter 4 — The Voice of the Station

He looked at the tracks. The afternoon was the amber kind, the light falling at an angle through the station roof in long golden bars that moved as the clouds moved outside. "Wo baad mein bataaoonga," he said.

Kavya had learned by now that baad mein bataaoonga did not mean he would not tell her. It meant he would tell her when he was ready, and that she should not push, and that the waiting was part of the telling.

What she did not know yet — what he was not yet ready to tell her — was that he had not retired because of age. He had retired because in 2013, in November, on a Thursday morning, he had been sitting at his microphone about to announce the arrival of the Varanasi Express when something had happened to his voice. Not permanently — the doctors had said it was stress and grief. But in that moment, sitting at the microphone with the words ready, he had opened his mouth and nothing had come out.

Nothing at all.

In thirty-eight years, in thousands of announcements — in good days and bad days and the day he had a fever of 102 degrees and still came in because there was no one to cover — his voice had never failed him. Not once.

He had sat at the silent microphone for a full minute. Then he had gotten up, walked to the Station Superintendent's office, placed his ID on the desk, and said: Main ab aur kaam nahi kar sakta.

The Superintendent had looked at him and had not asked why. He had simply nodded and said: Theek hai, Mishraji. Bahut kaam kiya aapne.

Three months later, he had begun coming to Platform 9 every afternoon. He had not yet told Kavya why his voice had failed. That was the part that came later. That was the part that was harder.
