(First).

And, at the far right: Classroom Desk Master — Emergency Use.

She took it. She went back to the classroom. She tried the key in the locked drawer. It turned. The drawer opened.

Inside: three things. A printed spreadsheet — the one Dev had described, with columns of student names, assessment categories, and two sets of numbers, one in black ink and one annotated in red, the discrepancies marked with small, precise circles. A folder of printed mark sheets from the previous academic year, the dates and signatures of the previous teacher still visible. And a sealed envelope with a single word on the front, written in Kavitha Rao's careful handwriting: If.

She looked at the envelope for a long time. If. It required a condition, an event, something that needed to happen before if became relevant. If something happened. If she didn't come back. If someone needed to know.

She opened it. The letter inside was three paragraphs, handwritten.

If you are reading this, something has happened to make the contents of this drawer necessary.

The spreadsheet documents marks adjustments made to the internal assessment records of six students in Class 9-B and Class 9-C over the past two academic years. The adjustments were made without the assessing teachers' knowledge, in the school's digital system, and benefit students from families who have made significant financial contributions to the school's infrastructure fund. The original marks are shown in black. The adjusted marks — which are what the board exam authority will receive — are shown in red. The original mark sheets are attached.

I discovered this by accident, by comparing a paper mark sheet I had retained from last year with the digital record for the same period. I brought it to Mr. Iyer informally, believing it was an error. It was not treated as an error. What happened after that is a matter of record — I will keep that record. If this letter is being read, I was not able to keep it safely. The evidence in this drawer is what I was able to leave behind. Please use it.

— Kavitha Rao
