Chapter 1 — The Warning

She found the neem tree. She turned left. And Dohariya appeared — slowly, reluctantly, as if the village itself was deciding whether to let her in.

---

Satish was waiting in the village square — a clearing between the panchayat building and a small Hanuman temple where three goats grazed with the bored entitlement of creatures who'd been there longer than any human structure. He was forty-two, thin, chain-smoker, with the perpetually harassed expression of a man who worked three jobs and was behind on all of them.

"Signal nahi aata idhar," he said by way of apology. No signal here.

"I noticed."

"Rehne ka arrangement ho gaya hai. Pradhan ji ke ghar mein ek kamra diya hai. Clean hai. Attached bathroom hai — sort of. Bucket system."

"That's fine."

Satish led her through the village. Dohariya was arranged the way most UP villages are arranged — in concentric circles of caste and consequence. The pradhan's pukka house near the centre. The Brahmin quarter to the north, with slightly better construction and slightly worse plumbing. The Yadav and Kurmi houses to the south. And at the edges, where the village dissolved into fields and eventually forest, the Dalit tola — smaller houses, thinner walls, the geography of hierarchy made literal in brick and mortar.

Nidhi noticed the Pandey house immediately. Not because anyone pointed it out, but because it was impossible to miss — the way a broken tooth is impossible to miss in a smile. It sat at the northeast corner of the village, set back from the main path by a compound wall that was taller than any wall needed to be. The wall was old — colonial-era brick, crumbling at the top, stained with decades of monsoon and neglect. Above the wall, you could see the upper floor of the house — a haveli-style structure with jharokha windows and a roof that sagged in the middle like the back of an old horse.

"Woh Pandey house hai?" Nidhi asked, pointing.

Satish glanced at it. The glance lasted exactly one second — long enough to confirm, short enough to deny interest.

"Haan. Chalo, pradhan ji milte hain." Yes. Come, let's meet the village head.

"I want to go there."

"Nidhi ji, pehle settle ho jaiye. Kal se shooting karenge. Sab milwa dunga — pradhan, pandit ji, buzurg log. Sab."

"And the Pandey house?"

Satish stopped walking. He turned to her with the expression of a man choosing his words the way a surgeon chooses incision points — carefully, knowing that the wrong cut would cause bleeding.

"Pandey house ki baat mat kijiye. Yahan ke logon ko pasand nahi aata."

"Why?"

"Kyunki kuch cheezein hoti hain jinhe rehne dena chahiye. Band kamre. Puraani baatein. Aap yahan traditions pe documentary banana aayi hain — bahut traditions hain. Holi ki, chhath ki, shaadi ki. Sab milega. Pandey house ki zaroorat nahi hai."

Nidhi was not a person who responded well to being told what she didn't need. It was, in fact, the fastest way to make her need it urgently.

"Satish ji, a locked room in a sixty-year-old house with a taboo that an entire village observes? That's not a sidebar. That's the story."

Satish lit a cigarette. Took a long drag. Exhaled in the particular way of a man who knows the argument is already lost.

"Aapki marzi. Lekin main Pandey house ke andar nahi jaunga. Aur raat ko to bilkul nahi." Your choice. But I won't go inside the Pandey house. And definitely not at night.

"Why not at night?"
