Chapter 5 — Ren's Secret

They left Halvenmoor before dawn.Vane's men would be watching the main roads by morning — this was Deven's assessment, delivered with the practical confidence of someone who had spent years staying one step ahead of people with larger armies — so they went south first, looping through the scrublands, adding two days to the journey. Kael did not complain about this. He was learning, incrementally and not entirely comfortably, that choosing your own life required a great deal more navigation than he'd anticipated.Ren travelled with them now. She and Maren had arrived at a functional working relationship with the speed of two people who recognized in each other the same basic operating mode: gather information, assess accurately, act on the assessment. Deven observed this development with the expression of a man who had expected to be the most competent person in the party and was reassessing. On the second night, camped in the scrubland with a fire that Kael had lit from cold ground — a habit, faster and easier than flint, he'd stopped noticing he did it — Ren told him about the Keeper's Circle."We're the oldest institution in the Cinderlands," she said. "Older than the empire. We predate the Ashen Throne by a hundred years. Our function is the preservation and interpretation of the historical record — not for any political purpose, but because the record is the record and it matters.""That's what you were taught to say," Maren said, from across the fire. "What's the actual function?"Ren looked at her. A pause that was half assessment and half, Kael thought, the beginning of respect. "The actual function is the same. We preserve the record. But in practice, that means we sometimes know things that governments would prefer we didn't, and we have to decide what to do with that knowledge.""Like the removed line from the prophecy," Kael said."Like that." She was quiet for a moment. "The line was removed from the public copy by the High Council in the first year after the throne broke. They decided it was — destabilizing. If the prophecy says the Ashborn will make the throne unnecessary, then nobody with political power wants that widely known.""Because the throne is how power is legitimized," Maren said."The throne and everything built on top of the throne. The empire, the succession laws, the tithe system, the regional governors — all of it traces back to whoever sits in that chair and the chair's recognition of them. If the chair becomes unnecessary—""Everything built on the chair becomes unnecessary," Kael said.Ren looked at him. "Yes.""That's not remaking the empire," Deven said slowly. He was looking at the fire. "That's dismantling it.""Or replacing it with something that doesn't need a chair at its centre," Ren said. "Something that doesn't derive authority from a single resonant object and the person who can activate it." She paused. "The Ashen Throne was built by a Maker. It's a tool. A very old, very powerful tool. Tools can be superseded."Kael looked at the fire. He thought about the city breathing through his palms. He thought about the warmth in the Cinderstone that was not just geological — something older than that, something that ran through the volcanic rock the way blood ran through living things."The marks," he said. "You said they resonate with the throne. But I feel it everywhere. In all the Cinderstone."Ren looked at him sharply."The whole ground of the Cinderlands is volcanic," he said. "Every city, every wall, every road is built on what used to be burning. I feel it all. Not just the throne." He paused. "Which means the throne isn't special because of what it is. It's special because someone decided to concentrate the resonance into a single object and call it authority."A long silence."That," Ren said, very carefully, "is the line of reasoning I've been developing for two years and have been afraid to say aloud, because if I'm right it means the entire political architecture of the Cinderlands is built on an arbitrary decision that happened to calcify into tradition." She looked at him. "You arrived at it in three minutes.""I've been feeling the ground my whole life," Kael said. "I'm just now understanding what I was feeling."Maren had been quiet through this. Now she said: "So the question is: if the throne's authority is arbitrary — what replaces it? You don't dismantle something that's held three hundred years without having something ready."Nobody answered. The fire was very still.
