The second team was three people: a senior field officer, a data verification specialist, and a historical documentation consultant who had been brought in specifically because of the nature of the flag. They went with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and better equipment than Meera had had, and they were briefed on the full contents of her submission before they went.
She was not part of the team. She was in Delhi when they went. She was told the results in Dr. Pillai's office, three weeks after the second team's return.
The senior field officer's report said this:
The team had followed the GPS coordinates from Meera's submission. The coordinates placed them on a forest road in the eastern district of Chhattisgarh. They had driven the road for the distance indicated in Meera's field notes. At the coordinates designated as the beginning of the approach path, they had entered the forest on foot.
They found the remains of a village.
