Sanjay Rawat was at the helipad when the first helicopter returned.
He was always at the helipad when he could be. It was not required — his job was coordination, and coordination happened from the office. But he had a principle about being present at arrivals, which was that the people who came off the helicopter or out of the vehicle or around the corner of the disaster had just been through something that most people never went through, and the first person they saw when they came out of it mattered. He wanted to be that person. He wanted the first face to be the face of someone who knew what had happened and was glad they had come through it.
