The Ninth Call

Chapter 11 — The New Moon

Page 2 of 2 • ~3 min read

His team was good. The plan was solid. But plans, as every officer knows, survive contact with reality the way sandcastles survive contact with the tide.

At 8:30 PM, the sky was dark. No moon yet — the new moon was invisible, its absence creating the darkness that the Saxenas apparently required for their ritual. The farmhouse was lit from within — warm light, flickering, like candles.

8:40 PM. Officers in position. Entry points confirmed. Medical teams ready.

8:45 PM. Aarav's phone buzzed. His ninth call.

Unknown Caller. He answered.

No tapping this time. Just a voice — not Shalini's distorted whisper, not the young male voice from earlier calls. A different voice. A woman's voice. Clear, unmasked, speaking with the measured calm of someone who's already decided how this ends.

"Inspector Joshi. This is Aditi Saxena."

Aarav's blood crystallized. "How did you get this number?"

"I've had your number for months. I've been calling you. All nine calls. Not Raghav. Not my father. Me."

The tapping. The voice on earlier calls, disguised as male. The anonymous tips. The information about the farmhouse, about 1997, about the wrong brother. All of it — not from a victim, but from the architect's daughter.

"Shalini Jain is real," Aditi continued. "She was genuinely targeted. But I intercepted her early, offered her a choice — cooperate with me, or become the sixteenth offering. She chose to cooperate. She's been my voice when I needed someone to deliver messages I couldn't deliver myself."

"Why? Why feed me information?"

"Because I want this to end, Inspector. I've wanted it to end since I was twelve years old and watched my father carry a sleeping woman into a room in this house and lay her on a cot and tell me she was being 'elevated.' I've spent my entire life inside this machine. The PhD wasn't an analysis — it was a map. A map for someone like you to follow."

"You could have gone to the police years ago."

"My father is the police, Inspector. He funded DSP Sinha's election to the service commission. He's donated to every major party in UP and Haryana. He's untouchable — or was, until you started looking."

"And Nitin? Your brother?"

A pause. When she spoke again, her voice was thinner. "Nitin tried to leave. To expose it. Raghav found out. I don't know who actually — I wasn't there. But Nitin is dead because he was the only one of us with the courage to say no."

"What do you want?"

"I want you to come in at 8:47, exactly as planned. I've ensured the women aren't heavily sedated — I adjusted the doses this afternoon. They'll be groggy but mobile. The operatives are hired men, not believers — they'll surrender when they see police. Raghav will try to run. My father will not. He'll sit in his chair and wait, because in his mind, the police are an interruption, not a defeat."

"And you?"

"I'll be in the garden. Behind the tulsi. You'll find me there."

"Aditi —"

"8:47, Inspector. Don't be late."

The line went dead.

Aarav looked at his watch. 8:46 PM. One minute.

He radioed the team: "Go."

Thirty officers moved as one.
