Chapter 7 — The Sister's Ghost

Page 1 of 2 • ~3 min read

Aarav confronted Kavita on a Thursday evening, in her office, with the door closed and the curtains drawn. He placed the 1997 file on her desk and stood.

She looked at the file. Her face didn't change — not at first. Then, slowly, like a glacier calving, something moved behind her eyes. Not guilt. Not surprise. Something older than both.

"Sit down, Aarav."

He sat.

"Where did you find this?"

"Basement archives. You know where."

She opened the file. Touched the photograph — a girl of nineteen, with Kavita's jaw and someone else's smile. A girl who looked like a younger version of the woman sitting across from him, but lighter somehow, less weighed down.

"Meenakshi," Kavita said. Just the name. As if the name itself was a complete sentence.

"Your sister went missing in 1997 after visiting a diagnostic clinic. Perfect health. No trace. Twenty-eight years later, four women with the exact same profile are being abducted. And I find you driving to the farmhouse where they're being held."

Kavita was quiet for a long time. The clock on her wall ticked. The traffic on the road below provided its constant, indifferent soundtrack.

"I found the farmhouse three weeks ago," she said. "Before you did."

"How?"

"Because I've been investigating this pattern for five years, Aarav. Not as a police officer. On my own. Off the books."

She stood and walked to her filing cabinet — not the official one, but a smaller, locked drawer at the bottom. She opened it with a key she wore around her neck and pulled out a thick folder. She placed it on the desk.

Inside: fifteen missing person cases. Spanning twenty-eight years. All women, all in their twenties, all in perfect health, all connected to medical facilities. Not just NCR — Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhopal, Kolkata. Across North India. One or two per year, stretching back to 1997. Back to Meenakshi.

"Fifteen women," Kavita said. "Including my sister. All vanished. None found. The cases were handled by different jurisdictions, different states. Nobody connected them because nobody was looking."

"Except you."

"I've been looking since the day I joined the force. It's why I joined the force."

Aarav looked at the fifteen files. The weight of them — not physical, but temporal. Twenty-eight years of women disappearing, one by one, and one woman tracking the pattern alone, without resources, without authority, without anyone believing her.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.

"Because when I found the farmhouse and saw the four women, I also found something else. Something that made me understand that telling you — telling anyone — would set off a chain of events I couldn't control."

"What did you find?"

Kavita reached into the folder and pulled out a photograph. She placed it on the desk, facing Aarav.

It showed the inside of the farmhouse — the same room Aarav had seen, the same nine cots. But this photograph was different. It showed the wall behind the painting — the wall that Aarav hadn't examined because he'd been focused on the painting itself.

Behind the painting, partially hidden, was a list. Names, handwritten, in ink that had faded from black to brown. Fifteen names. Beside each name, a date.

The first name on the list was Meenakshi Sinha. The date: September 14, 1997.
