"Kaunsi vidhi?"

Kamla Devi's hands — steady until now — began to tremble. She set down her chai glass.

"Woh vidhi... usme likha tha ki agar koi apni suhaag raat ko ek particular mantra padhe, ek particular yantra ke andar, to woh apne saathi ko..." She searched for the word. "Absorb kar sakta hai. Saathi ka astitva — unki zindagi, unki aatma, unki shakti — sab apne andar kheench sakta hai. Do log ek ho jaate hain. Lekin ek zinda rehta hai, doosra..."

The ritual described a method where, on the wedding night, within a specific yantra, one person could absorb the other. Their existence, their life, their soul, their energy — all drawn in. Two become one. One lives. The other...

"Doosra kya hota hai?"

"Doosra rehta hai. Lekin nahi rehta. Zinda hai lekin nahi hai. Kamre mein hai lekin nahi hai. Woh... andar hai. Us insaan ke andar jo absorb karta hai. Lekin kamra unhe chhodta nahi. Kamra yantra ka hissa hai. Yantra toot nahi sakta. Isiliye darwaza nahi khulta."

The other one remains. But doesn't remain. Alive but not alive. In the room but not in the room. Inside the person who absorbed them. But the room won't let go — the room is part of the yantra. The yantra can't be broken. That's why the door doesn't open.

Nidhi's recorder was running. Her journalist's brain was cataloguing this as folklore — a village's attempt to explain a tragedy through supernatural narrative. But her body — the part of her that had heard singing at 3 AM, that had touched a sindoor handprint on a white wall, that was carrying a warm bridal bangle in her pocket — her body was listening differently.

"Taayi ji, aap keh rahi hain ki Virendra ji ne yeh vidhi —"

"Nahi." Kamla Devi's voice was sharp. Firm. "Virendra ne nahi ki. Virendra ne nahi ki. Woh vidhi dulhan ne ki. Chandrakanta ne."

Nidhi's thoughts stopped moving.

"Chandrakanta ne?"

"Woh kitaab — jo Virendra ke kamre mein thi — woh Chandrakanta ke saath aayi thi. Dahej mein. Benaras se. Khandaan ki thi. Pushtaini. Sab sochte the shaadi ke liye Chandrakanta aayi. Lekin Chandrakanta shaadi ke liye nahi aayi thi."

The book came with Chandrakanta. In her dowry. From Varanasi. Everyone thought she came for the wedding. But Chandrakanta didn't come for the wedding.

"Toh kisliye aayi thi?"

Kamla Devi looked at Nidhi with eyes that were dry but carried the weight of an ocean.

"Kamre ke liye. Us kamre ke liye. Woh kamra aam kamra nahi hai. Woh jagah hai — bahut purani jagah — jahan do duniya milti hain. Ek darwaze ke do taraf. Is taraf zindagi. Us taraf... kuch aur. Chandrakanta ko pata tha. Uska khandaan jaanta tha. Unhone Virendra ko dhundha — nahi, unhone kamre ko dhundha. Shaadi bahana thi. Dulha bahana tha. Woh kamra chahti thi."

The room isn't an ordinary room. It's a place — ancient — where two worlds meet. Two sides of a door. This side: life. The other side: something else. Chandrakanta knew. Her family knew. They didn't find Virendra — they found the room. The wedding was an excuse. The groom was an excuse. She wanted the room.
