"Aur Virendra?"

"Virendra ko kisi ne nahi bataya. Woh ek aadmi tha jise ek ladki se pyaar ho gaya — achanak, bewaajah, jaise pyaar hota hai. Usse kya pata tha ki pyaar nahi tha. Woh bhi vidhi ka hissa tha. Usse qareeb laana. Usse kamre mein laana. Aur suhaag raat ko..."

Nobody told Virendra. He was a man who fell in love — suddenly, without reason, the way love happens. He didn't know it wasn't love. It was part of the ritual. Bringing him close. Bringing him to the room. And on the wedding night...

Kamla Devi stopped. She picked up her chai. Her hands were still trembling, but she drank with the determination of a woman who'd decided she would finish this story and it would not finish her.

"Suhaag raat ko Chandrakanta ne woh vidhi ki. Virendra ko absorb kiya. Uski zindagi, uski shakti, uski aatma — sab apne andar kheench liya. Aur kamre ne — us jagah ne — darwaza band kar diya. Kyunki vidhi poori nahi hui thi."

Chandrakanta performed the ritual. Absorbed Virendra. And the room sealed itself — because the ritual wasn't complete.

"Poori kyon nahi hui?"

"Kyunki vidhi mein do cheezein chahiye. Pehli: ek jeevan ka aahuti — yeh Virendra tha. Doosri: ek aur aatma. Ek sachchi aatma. Jo apni marzi se kamre mein aaye. Jo darwaza khud khole. Jo andar jaaye — jaankar ki bahar nahi aa sakti."

The ritual needs two things. First: a life as offering — that was Virendra. Second: another soul. A willing one. Who enters the room of their own choice. Who opens the door knowing they can't come back.

"Tab se Chandrakanta wait kar rahi hai?"

"Saath saal. Kamre mein. Gaate hue. Bulaate hue. Intezaar mein ki koi aaye. Koi sunne wali aaye. Koi samajhne wali aaye. Koi jo darwaza khud khole."

Sixty years. In the room. Singing. Calling. Waiting for someone to come. Someone who listens. Someone who understands. Someone who opens the door by choice.

Nidhi's hand went to her pocket. The bangle was warm. Warmer than before. She could feel it pulsing — not a metaphor, not an impression. An actual throb, timed to a rhythm that wasn't her heartbeat.

Kamla Devi's eyes followed the movement. "Aapke paas kya hai?"

Nidhi pulled out the bangle. Kamla Devi saw it and made a sound — not a scream, not a gasp, but a small, terrible sound, the sound of a confirmation, the sound of something you've feared for decades becoming real.

"Woh uski hai. Chandrakanta ki."

"Mujhe mili. Mere bistar pe."

"Toh usne aapko chun liya."

She's chosen you.

The bangle pulsed in Nidhi's hand. Once. Twice. Three times.

And somewhere, five hours away by bus, in a locked room in a crumbling haveli in a village called Dohariya, a woman who had been sixty years young and sixty years patient, smiled.
