Bengaluru. Rohan Verma's lab. November 11th — 12th.She worked through the night in Rohan's lab.Not alone — Rohan stayed, the specific solidarity of a person who understood the weight of what they were handling and was not going to leave someone to handle it alone. He made tea twice. He did not talk unless she asked him something. He was, she noted, the kind of person Arjun would have trusted: precisely calibrated between careful and brave. The drive contained four folders.FOLDER 1: KAVACH_DOCUMENTATION. Eight hundred files — source code fragments, deployment records, client contracts, technical specifications. The documentation of a surveillance product that had evolved from a monitoring tool into something considerably more capable. The latest build notes, dated October 2023, described a module called DAGGER. DAGGER's function, in the technical language of the documentation: "Remote access to vehicle control systems through connected infrastructure. Tested across seventeen vehicle models. Success rate: 94.2%."She stopped. She read it again.94.2% success rate. On seventeen vehicle models. She looked at the list. Volkswagen Polo was model number eleven. She made a very careful note and moved on.FOLDER 2: CLIENT_LIST. Encrypted sub-files, each tagged with a country code. She could decrypt most of them with the key Rohan found in a separate text file in the root directory. Four government contracts. India was not among them. The four were: a Gulf state, a Southeast Asian government, an Eastern European security apparatus, and — this was the one that changed the atmosphere in the room — a private security contractor based in the UK with ties to three intelligence services.UK.London.She thought about the note in Sheet 4 of the spreadsheet: Don't trust the London office.FOLDER 3: SUBJECTS. This was the material that made her hands go still on the keyboard. Forty-nine individuals. Journalists, lawyers, a retired judge, two members of parliament from different countries, three academics. Each file containing: their personal communications (illegally intercepted), their location history (illegally tracked), and, for eight of them, a sub-folder labelled DAGGER_TARGET.Eight people who had been the target of a vehicular assassination attempt through the KAVACH-DAGGER system.Three of them had died in road accidents. One of the three was a journalist named Preethi Anand.Naina's hands were very still. She had looked up Preethi Anand on the plane. The journalist who had stopped writing about Vayu in 2021.She had stopped writing because she had died in a road accident in Chennai in August 2021.The accident report had noted a brake failure.FOLDER 4: ARJUN_PROTOCOL.
