One item was not small: "Tell the truth."

Meera had been living in a web of lies — or, more accurately, a web of omissions, which are the lies that polite people tell. She hadn't told Rohit about Kabir. She hadn't told Kabir about the diagnosis. She hadn't told Rohit about the diagnosis. She hadn't told her parents she'd quit journalism. She hadn't told anyone the real reason she'd moved to Goa — which wasn't Rohit's romantic gesture, but Meera's escape. She'd been experiencing symptoms for months before the diagnosis: headaches, visual disturbances, a tremor in her left hand that she hid by keeping it in her pocket.

She'd moved to Goa to hide. To disappear gracefully, the way a candle gutters and goes out — slowly, privately, without the drama of a public extinguishing.

But the affair with Kabir changed the equation. She hadn't planned to fall in love. She'd planned to drift through her remaining months in the numb cocoon of a failing marriage, and instead she'd been ambushed by something genuine and passionate and terrifyingly alive. Kabir woke her up. And once you're awake, you can't choose to sleep through your own death.

So she decided to tell the truth. All of it. To everyone. On the night of the party.

She called me a week before. "Kavya, I'm going to do it. At the party. I'm going to tell Rohit about Kabir, tell Kabir about the diagnosis, tell everyone the truth about everything. And then I'm going to spend whatever time I have left without carrying a single lie."

"That's a lot of truth for one night."

"I don't have a lot of nights."

I flew to Goa. Not to stop her — I knew better than to try to stop Meera when she'd decided something. I came to be there. To stand next to her while the world she'd built came apart, and to help her build whatever came next.

But when I arrived on Friday, two days before the party, I discovered something that changed the plan.

Rohit knew about Kabir. He'd hired a PI. He had photographs. And he was planning his own reveal — a public humiliation, timed for maximum damage, designed to destroy Meera socially while positioning himself as the wronged husband.

If Meera told the truth first, it would be an act of courage. If Rohit revealed it first, it would be an act of violence. The same information, the same facts, but the framing — who speaks first, who controls the narrative — made the difference between liberation and destruction.

I had to intervene. I had to tell Rohit something that would stop his plan without revealing Meera's secret — because the diagnosis was hers to share, on her terms, in her time.

So at 10:15 PM, at the party, I pulled Rohit aside and I told him this:

"Meera is dying."
