Two words. I didn't elaborate. I didn't explain the diagnosis, the prognosis, the treatment options. I just said: "Meera is dying. Whatever you're planning — the confrontation, the humiliation — you're going to do it to a woman who has months to live. Is that the last memory you want?"

He broke. The calculation left his eyes and something human rushed in to fill the space. He looked at me, and for the first time in the years I'd known him, I saw Rohit Kaul without his armour. Just a man. Learning that the woman he'd been too busy to love was going to die.

That's what changed everything. That's the secret Rohit wouldn't tell you, because he gave me his word he wouldn't reveal the diagnosis until Meera was ready.

And Meera — Meera took the opening I'd created. Rohit abandoned his plan. The party continued. Guests left. And at 12:30 AM, in the kitchen, Meera told Rohit about Kabir — gently, honestly, without the bombshell she'd feared he'd detonate first. She told him she loved Kabir. She told him she was sorry. She told him everything.

Except the diagnosis. She couldn't. Not yet. One truth at a time.

I was in the guest room. I heard them talking through the wall — not the words, but the tones. Calm. Painful. The sound of two people deconstructing a marriage with the careful honesty of archaeologists handling a fragile artefact.

At 1:45, the talking stopped. I heard the terrace door open. Footsteps on the stairs. Meera, going to the terrace.

I waited. Ten minutes. Fifteen. Then I went up.

She was standing at the cliff edge. Not on the rail — just near it, looking at the ocean. The moon was hidden. The sea was black. The only light was from the villa's windows below, casting faint upward shadows.

"Meera."

She turned. And her face — Sub-Inspector, I am a psychologist, I have spent my career reading faces, and what I saw on Meera's face in that moment was not despair, not fear, not confusion. It was clarity. The absolute, unshakeable clarity of someone who has arrived at a decision after months of agonising and has found, on the other side of the decision, peace.

"Kavya," she said. "I told him everything."

"I know."

"Not about the diagnosis. About Kabir. About why I moved here. About all the lies. And he — he was kind. For the first time in years, he was truly kind."

"Good."

"I'm going to tell Kabir tomorrow. About the tumour. And then I'm going to tell my parents. And then I'm done lying. For whatever time I have left, I'm done."
