Chapter 3 — Living Off-Grid

"They're not random, Karan. They're specific. They're the people who, if they kept asking questions, might eventually discover what the AIN really is. And what the AIN really is — what it was always designed to be — is the most powerful tool of social control ever created. Not by a dictator. By a democracy. A democracy that convinced 1.5 billion people to voluntarily hand over their biometric data, their financial records, their medical histories, their movement patterns, and their social connections to a single centralised system. And then used that system to ensure they never questioned it."

Karan stared at the photograph. Vikram Rathore's face stared back — smiling, benign, the face of a builder.

"We need to get inside the AIN," Karan said. "Not just the public layer. The hidden architecture. The deletion protocol. If we can document how it works — technically, specifically — we can prove it exists. And if we can prove it exists, we can prove it's being used."

"Getting inside the AIN requires access to the central servers. Which are in the AIN Command Centre in Hyderabad — the most heavily secured digital facility in Asia."

"Then we need someone on the inside."

Zara smiled. Not the tired, ironic smile of a resistance leader. A different smile. The smile of someone who has been waiting for someone else to arrive at the same conclusion.

"We have someone. She's been there for three years, building the case from inside the firewall. She's the reason we know about the deletion protocol. She's the reason I found you."

"Who?"

"Her name is Aditi Kapoor. She's a senior systems engineer at the AIN Command Centre. She has Level 5 clearance — one level below Rathore himself."

"And she's helping us? Why?"

"Because she was Zero Number One. The first person ever deleted. In 2027, when the system was still in beta. She was deleted by accident — a testing error. It took her three months to get her identity restored. But in those three months, she saw what it was like on the other side. And she decided that nobody should have to live there."

"She got her identity back. And then she went back inside."

"She went back inside to make sure she could bring the whole thing down when the time was right." Zara leaned forward. "The time is right, Karan. Aditi has found the deletion protocol's source code. She's copied it. But she can't get it out of the Command Centre — the facility is air-gapped, physically isolated. Data goes in. Data doesn't come out."

"So we need to go to Hyderabad."

"We need to go to Hyderabad. And we need to get into the most secure building in the country. Without Aadhaar. Without identity. Without existing."

Karan looked at the ghost station — the platform, the oil lamps, the forty people who lived in the gaps of a system that had erased them. Then he looked at Zara. Then at the photograph of Vikram Rathore.

"When do we leave?"
