Chapter 8 — The Morning After

The press didn't buy it. Not because they were brave — the Indian press had a complicated relationship with bravery — but because the evidence was too technical to dismiss. The source code was real. Any engineer could verify it. The execution logs contained timestamps, Aadhaar numbers, and deletion records that matched the real disappearances of real people. You could call it fabrication, but you'd have to explain why the fabrication contained the correct Aadhaar numbers of four hundred people who had, in fact, vanished.

The Prime Minister was silent. For thirty-six hours — an eternity in the news cycle — the PM's office issued no statement. The silence was more damaging than any denial, because silence, in politics, is the sound of calculation. The PM was calculating — measuring the damage, weighing the options, deciding which version of the truth to adopt.

On Friday evening, the PM addressed the nation. Not from the usual studio — from a podium in Parliament, flanked by the flags, the constitutional weight of the setting deliberately chosen to convey gravity.

"The Aadhaar Integrated Network," the PM said, reading from a prepared text with the careful enunciation of someone who knows every word will be analysed, "was designed to empower every Indian. It has achieved remarkable things — financial inclusion, efficient governance, service delivery at a scale no other nation has matched."

A pause. The cameras zoomed in.

"However. It has come to my attention that certain functionalities within the AIN — functionalities that were not authorised by this office and not presented to Parliament — have been used in ways that are inconsistent with the constitutional rights of Indian citizens."

The translation: I didn't know. It wasn't me. It was rogue elements.

"I have ordered an immediate investigation. The Special Advisor on Digital Governance, Mr. Vikram Rathore, has been relieved of his responsibilities pending the outcome of this investigation. All citizen deletions, if confirmed, will be reversed. The Aadhaar Score system will be suspended pending a comprehensive review."

The translation: I'm sacrificing Rathore. The system will be paused. Please stop protesting.

"The government of India is committed to the digital empowerment of every citizen. We will not allow the tools of progress to become the instruments of injustice."
