"Band dikhayiye."

He extended his wrist. The new Band — issued by the commission — scanned green. The screen displayed:

AADHAAR STATUS: ACTIVE. CITIZEN PROFILE: VERIFIED. KARAN MEHTA. ACCESS: FULL.

He looked at the screen. Verified. Active. Full access. The words that had been absent for three months, that had defined the border between existing and not existing, blinking in green on a government screen.

The official stamped a form. "Welcome back, sir."

Karan walked out into Connaught Place. The October sun — it was October again, a full year since the deletion — hit his face. The city moved around him. Bands glowing. Turnstiles opening. The AIN humming.

He could buy chai. He could ride the Metro. He could open his apartment door. He could call his mother, who had, over the last three months, been informed of everything and had processed it with the particular resilience of an Indian mother who has survived enough national crises to know that survival is not a luxury but a skill.

He was someone again. According to the system.

But the system, Karan now knew, was not the arbiter of his existence. The system was a tool. A powerful tool, a necessary tool, perhaps even a beneficial tool when used as designed. But a tool. Not an identity. Not a self. Not a soul.

He'd existed before the Band. He'd existed without it. He'd exist after it.

That knowledge — earned through three months of non-existence, through ghost stations and barter economies and a truck driven by a Sikh man who thought the AIN was bakwaas — was worth more than any score.

He touched his Band. Green pulse. Verified.

But beneath the Band, on his wrist, he'd gotten a tattoo. A small one. Black ink, clean lines.

A zero.

Not because he was nothing.

Because he'd learned what everything was.
