She was at her first polling booth at seven AM.
She could not legally campaign on polling day — no speeches, no door-to-door, no literature distribution. What she could do was observe, and be visible, which was itself a form of information for voters who were deciding in the booth. She went booth to booth in the constituency, her campaign ID visible, watching the process, checking the voter rolls, flagging any issues to the election commission representatives with the precise and documented patience of a woman who had been a lawyer and knew how oversight worked.
She saw him at Booth 7, Ward 4, at ten AM. He was doing the same thing — booth monitoring, visible presence, his party ID on his jacket. They saw each other across the schoolroom that had been converted to the polling site. He nodded. She nodded. Both of them went back to monitoring their respective sections of the room.
She saw him again at Booth 19, Ward 9, at two PM. They were on opposite sides of the booth exterior, the legal boundary being the line beyond which candidates could not approach. He was talking to an election officer about a voter roll discrepancy — she could see from his posture and from the officer's response that he had caught something real, that someone's name was on the roll wrong, and he was being the person who fixed it instead of leaving it. She watched him do this and thought about thirty days of watching him be the person who fixed things and thought about the election results that would come at some point tonight or tomorrow morning, and thought about how a result was a result and you lived with it and what happened after was what came next.
