Chapter 6 — The Leak

The story broke at six-fifteen AM on Day Fourteen.

She knew before she was fully awake — her phone had been vibrating since five-forty-five, which was her first sign that something had broken, because five-forty-five was too early even for campaign emergencies and the only thing that came at five-forty-five was the kind of news that didn't wait. She picked up the phone. She read the headline. Then she lay back on the pillow for a moment and looked at the ceiling and thought: of course.

The headline was on a national political tabloid: BJP's Malhotra and Opposition's Siddiqui Share Flat in Lucknow — Rivals by Day, Roommates by Night? The question mark was doing an enormous amount of work. The article had photographs — both of them entering and leaving the building, the photos clearly taken from across the street over multiple days by someone who had been waiting for exactly this package. The article described the court order accurately, which it had clearly obtained from the court records, but framed it in the specific register of political tabloid coverage that was not technically lying but was doing everything it could to imply without stating.

Her phone was already going to voicemail from eight simultaneous callers. She had texts from Faiza, from the party communications desk, from three journalists she had known for years who were sending the specific texts of reporters who were asking for comment before they published their own versions. She had a text from her mother that said simply: What is happening? Call me.

She got up. She went to the kitchen. He was already there.

He was at the table with his phone and his coffee and the expression of someone who had been awake for a while and had been thinking. His campaign manager Rajesh was in the small bedroom — she could hear his voice through the wall, already on calls. Her own campaign manager would arrive in twenty minutes.

"Have you seen it?" she said.

"Yes," he said. "Since five-fifteen."

She sat down. She looked at her phone — seven new notifications in the ninety seconds she had been in the kitchen. She put it face-down on the table. "Who leaked it?" she said.
