Chapter 4 — WHAT SLEEPS BENEATH

Elder Bahu looked at the photo for a very long time.

Then he set the phone down on the table and folded his hands.

"I was afraid of this," he said.

"What does it say?" Arya asked.

"It says: He is still here."

The room went very quiet.

Arya's grandmother was in the corner, and she made a small, frightened sound that Arya had never heard from her before. That scared Arya more than anything else.

"Who," Arya said carefully, "is still here?"

Bahu told them the history that wasn't in any book.

Everyone knew the story of the Ramayana. Even humans knew it — they celebrated Diwali, they lit lamps, they burned effigies of Ravana every October. The story was: Rama defeated Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. Sita was rescued. Everyone came home. Good won. Evil was destroyed.

What humans had forgotten — or perhaps had never been told — was what had happened to the darkness itself.

Ravana was a man. A very powerful, very brilliant, very terrible man. But the war he had started, the war that had pulled armies across oceans and broken the sky open — that war had fed something. Like a fire feeds on wood. The fighting, the dying, the rage, the grief — all of it had poured into the ground. Into stone. Into a place deep beneath the earth.

"We call it the Adhama," Bahu said. "There is no good translation. Roughly: the weight of unfinished war."

"You're talking about it like it's alive," Arya said.

"It is alive," Bahu said. "Not conscious, perhaps. Not thinking. But hungry, yes. It has slept for three thousand years because the stone above it holds it in place. The stone of this city. The specific stone of this city, laid by Vanaras who knew what was under it, and why it had to stay sealed."

Arya felt the answer before she asked the question.

"And if the dam floods the city," she said.

"The stone fractures," Bahu said. "The seal breaks. And the hunger wakes up."

"What does it do when it wakes up?"

Bahu was quiet for a moment.

"Three thousand years ago, it took an army of gods and men and Vanaras to put it to sleep," he said. "And we had Rama. We do not have Rama now."
