Chapter 8 — WHAT WAKES IN THE DARK

Three weeks later, Meera's story went live.

She had spent those weeks carefully — visiting Kishkindha twice, meeting with Bahu, photographing the city with permission, interviewing families, getting the details exactly right. She had fought with her editor for ten days before he agreed to run it, and only after a lawyer had read every word twice.

The headline read:

INDIA'S FORGOTTEN PEOPLE: THE VANARA COMMUNITY WHOSE 3,000-YEAR-OLD CITY WILL BE DROWNED BY A CONTROVERSIAL DAM

It was not the full truth. It didn't mention the Adhama. It mentioned a living community, historical cultural significance, government corruption, and a cover-up in the environmental assessment. It was enough.

By the second day, it had two million reads. By the third day, it was in every national newspaper. By the fourth day, three opposition MPs had asked questions in Parliament. By the fifth day, the Ministry of Water Resources had announced a "temporary pause" on Phase 3 construction pending a new environmental review.

In Kishkindha, people cried and celebrated.

Arya did not celebrate.

Because on the same night the story went live, she felt it.

Deep in the earth. A pulse. Slow and huge, like the heartbeat of something enormous that had been asleep for a very long time.

The Adhama had felt the attention. The crowd emotion — fear, hope, rage, grief — all of it feeding down through the soil, through stone, down to where the darkness lived.

It was not more asleep now.

It was less.

Arya went back to the eastern wall.

She pressed her hand flat against it.

The Blood Memory hit her like a wave.

She saw — felt — the original sealing. Three thousand years ago. A Vanara woman, older than anyone, standing in a cavern below the city, pressing her hands against stone that was screaming. Pouring something into it. Not magic in any comfortable sense. More like —

Will.

The kind of will that costs something. That uses up a piece of you.

The seal was made of intention as much as stone. Someone had to mean it. Completely. With no reservation.

Arya pulled her hand away.

Her fingers were shaking.

She knew what she had to do. She had known since Bahu first said the word downward.

She didn't like it. But she knew.
