Chapter 11 — The Arrest

Page 1 of 1 • ~3 min read

Whitmore's arrest happened on a Tuesday morning, at the department, which Sadie had decided was the correct location because it was the most documented and because it sent a message that could not be misread.Nora was not there. This was Sadie's call and Nora had agreed with it — a detective from Whitmore's own division making the arrest would compromise both the arrest and Nora's subsequent testimony. Instead, two federal agents handled it, with Sadie present, in Whitmore's office at 9:15 AM.She heard about it from Sadie's call at 9:47: "He's in custody. He asked for his attorney immediately, which is smart. He didn't say anything else." A pause. "He looked at the folder when I put it on his desk. He looked at it for about three seconds and then he looked at the wall and didn't say anything else. Which tells me he knows what's in it.""He knows what's in it because he sent someone to find it," Nora said."Yes. We'll be able to prove that." Sadie's voice had the particular quality of controlled satisfaction. "Diane Reiss was picked up this morning in parallel — federal warrant, conspiracy to commit murder plus the financial fraud. She also went immediately to her attorney." A pause. "The cooperative one is your Mr. Calloway, who has apparently decided that full cooperation with federal prosecutors is his best option. He's been talking for sixteen hours.""What about Morrow?""His attorney was notified this morning. The vacatur petition will be filed by end of week. Given the strength of the new evidence and Calloway's cooperation, the DA's office has already indicated they won't contest." Sadie paused. "He could be out within two weeks."Eleven months. She sat with that number."And the Marcus Hale murder charge?""Calloway admits to the act. Whitmore's financial trail to the commission is documented. It's a federal murder-for-hire case now." Sadie's voice was careful. "It's strong. It will hold."After she hung up, Nora sat in her car in the lot outside the federal building for a while. She thought about Marcus, who had spent eighteen months doing the right thing with the methodical care that had made him a good detective for thirty years, and who had died because someone found out he was doing it.She thought about the recordings — the pre-recorded sequences with conditional branching that he'd built over three days last week, because he knew someone wanted to stop him and he wanted to make sure the case continued if they succeeded. She thought about the first voicemail. Four to six hours after he died. Scheduled to deliver if he didn't cancel it by 11 PM.He had prepared for his own death so meticulously that he'd found a way to work the case from the other side of it.She picked up her phone. She called Marcus's number. It rang four times. His voicemail: "You've reached Marcus Hale. Leave a message."She said: "It held. The case held. Morrow's going home." She paused. "I'm sorry it took us this long." She hung up.She sat in the car for one more minute. Then she drove.
