Prologue
The first voicemail arrived at 11:47 PM on a Thursday.
Marcus Hale had been dead for six hours.
Detective Nora Voss discovered both facts in the wrong order.
She found out about the voicemail first โ three words on her phone screen when she woke at midnight: New voicemail. Marcus. She'd heard it half-asleep, the voice so familiar that she'd smiled before the content registered. Then she'd played it again, sitting upright, her hand cold around the phone.
She found out Marcus Hale was dead at 12:09 AM, when she called him back and got his wife instead.
Elena Hale's voice, when she answered, had the specific flatness of a person who had already spent hours inside the worst thing that had ever happened to them. "He's gone," she said. "Nora, he's gone. They found him at the office. They think โ they think it was his heart."
Nora sat on the edge of her bed in the dark and said all the right things. She was good at right things in difficult moments โ it was a professional skill that had colonized her personal life so thoroughly she sometimes couldn't find the boundary.
After she hung up, she played the voicemail a third time.
Marcus Hale's voice, unhurried and precise, the voice of a man who had been her partner for nine years before he retired eighteen months ago to teach criminology at Keller University:
"Nora. I know this is strange timing but I need you to listen carefully. There's a name you need to find: Calloway. Not a suspect โ a key. The Briar case isn't closed. I know you closed it. I know what the file says. The file is wrong. The man we put away didn't do it. I'll explain everything โ call me back when you get this. And Nora? Don't talk to Whitmore about this. Don't talk to anyone at the department until you've heard from me again. I'm sorry to do this over a voicemail. I'll explain."
She played it a fourth time.
Marcus Hale: dead at sixty-two of apparent cardiac arrest.
Timestamp on the voicemail: 11:47 PM Thursday.
Time of death, as Elena had understood it from the preliminary assessment: between five and seven PM Thursday.
He had left her a voicemail four to six hours after he died.
Nora Voss sat in the dark for a very long time.
Then she opened her case files.
Then she started working.
