Prologue: What the Camera KeptRecovered footage. Sony FX6. Timestamp: November 17th, 2023. 03:22 AM.File: CLIP_0047_RAW. Duration: 4 minutes, 11 seconds. The camera is on the ground. This is clear from the angle: mud and root system filling the bottom third of the frame, the tree canopy above dense and lightless except where the camera's own light source catches the undersides of leaves. The camera is running. Nobody is holding it.For the first forty seconds: nothing. Mangrove mud, the sound of water moving somewhere, the specific sound of the Sundarbans at three in the morning, which is not silence — it is a thick, layered biological noise, the constant working of a place that does not rest.At 0:41: movement at the edge of the frame. Not an animal. Too upright. A person, or the shape of a person, moving between the prop roots of a large sundari tree. Moving away from the camera. At 0:52: sound. Difficult to describe. The closest analogy in the debrief transcripts: teeth. Multiple sets, working on something with the rhythmic efficiency of a repeated action. At 1:14: the shape stops moving. It turns. The camera's light source is weak at this distance — ten meters, possibly twelve — and the shape is mostly dark. What is visible: the pale rectangle of a face. Turned toward the camera. At 1:31: the shape moves again. Back through the roots. Gone.At 1:32 through 4:11: the mud and the roots and the canopy and the sound of the Sundarbans working in the dark. The remaining crew member, when shown this footage in the Gosaba facility, watched it once and then looked at the wall for a long time.He said: "That's Rohan."He said: "That's not Rohan."He did not explain the difference between these two statements. He has not spoken about the footage since.
