Gosaba Medical Facility. November 19th through 23rd. And after.Lata Bose was admitted to the Gosaba community health facility on the evening of November 18th for observation and a psychiatric assessment that she accepted with the cooperation of someone who had already assessed herself and agreed with the provisional findings. The clinical notes describe: "Patient is alert, oriented, physically healthy. Affect notably flat. Patient describes inability to experience alarm or urgency responses to threatening information. Patient demonstrates full cognitive function, no apparent memory disruption. Patient's self-report of symptoms is articulate and detailed."The attending doctor's note, day two: "Discussed with patient the possibility of stress-response disruption following a traumatic event. Patient agreed this was a reasonable medical framework and said she preferred it to the alternative."When asked what the alternative was, she said: "That the forest took something and I'm not going to get it back."When asked which she believed, she said: "Both." She paused. "They're the same thing."* * *Samir Chaudhary's memory disruption worsened over the following weeks. The pattern that had been visible in the footage — episodic lapses in sequential memory, events available but temporal context missing — became more pronounced in the month after the expedition. He was assessed by a neurologist in Kolkata in December and no organic cause was found. The assessment noted "possible dissociative sequencing disorder following acute stress" and recommended therapy. He continued to make documentaries. The Sundarbans project was shelved — not cancelled, shelved. He told the streaming platform it needed more time. It is still on his production slate. He has not returned to the Sundarbans. He has not, as far as anyone can determine, stopped thinking about it.* * *Priti Mukherjee published a paper eight months after the expedition. It was not about Daat Mandir. It was about what she called "spatial memory lacunae in oral tradition documentation" — a theoretical paper about the gaps in the record of sacred geography in the Sundarbans, the places that existed in practice but not in any written account, the negative space of the documented map.The paper did not describe her personal experience. It was a scholarly work, carefully argued, with fifty-three citations. One reviewer noted that the paper's central argument — that the most significant sacred sites in any landscape were systematically absent from formal records because the people who knew them understood that documentation was a form of exposure — was "unusually specific" and "reads as if derived from direct experience rather than secondary sources."Priti responded to this note with two sentences: "The reviewer is correct. Direct experience is the only way to understand certain kinds of absence."She has not been able to draw a floor plan of any building she entered after November 2023.She knows she is doing this. She does not know how to stop.* * *
